Ginger is a medicinal powerhouse, that has been used across various cultures as an anti-inflammatory, anti-nausea, immune boosting and antioxidant superstar. But perhaps, its less publicised properties are it’s brilliant detoxifying effects.

Detoxing with ginger

The reason ginger is included as part of our Detox Week comes down to it’s ability to stimulate digestion, sweating and circulation which pushes toxins through the body kicking off a beautiful detoxifying process.

We’re halfway through Detox Week and although we got excited about the liver detoxifying power of beetroot, and we asked that you never miss a day without adding in some green vegetables, we gotta say that everyone’s favourite root, ginger, really is a detox ninja (and not just because it rhymes).

The healing properties of ginger are due to its high levels of gingerol and shogaol, which help to sustain digestive enzymes and neutralise acids that support the entire digestive system.

If the Silly Season has wreaked havoc on your digestive system (too much booze and Christmas pud will do that), then ginger may be just what you need to relieve bloating, indigestion and constipation.

Ginger is also great for:

  • Nausea, motion sickness, and morning sickness.
  • Joint pain, arthritis, swelling or pain management.

HOW TO GET ROOTED

  • Make a fresh ginger, lemon, and honey tea.
  • Add to stir-fries, soups, and casseroles.
  • Grate fresh ginger or add dried ginger to smoothies.
