WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH SPIRULINA

What Is Spirulina

So what exactly is spirulina?

Spirulina is a natural blue-green alga and is one of the oldest life forms on earth, It’s usually consumed either in powder form or as a supplement.

It is partly responsible for producing the oxygen in the planet’s atmosphere that billions of years ago allowed Earth’s originating life forms to develop. Spirulina has been said to be consumed by the ancient Aztecs and exploded into popularity after NASA proposed that it could be grown Spirulina to feed their astronauts on long journeys.

Just one single tablespoon of dried spirulina powder contains

  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine): 11% of the RDA
  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): 15% of the RDA
  • 20 calories
  • 4.02 g of protein
  • 1.67 g of carbohydrate
  • 0.54 g of fat
  • 8 milligrams (mg) of calcium
  • 2 mg of iron
  • 14 mg of magnesium
  • 8 mg of phosphorous
  • 95 mg of potassium
  • 73 mg of sodium
  • 0.7 mg of vitamin C

Here is why we love it so much:

IT’LL KICK START YOUR DAY

Spirulina delivers a huge energy boost due to its high levels of iron, and B vitamins. Has it first thing in the morning instead of relying on caffeine or how about a green smoothie in the afternoon to tackle that 3 pm slump?

IT’S HIGH IN OMEGA 3’S

It also contains Omega 6 & 9.

IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR BONES

Make that INCREDIBLY good for your bones. Spirulina has 26 times the calcium than in full-cream milk, which makes it excellent for children, the elderly, and the injured.

IT’S A GREAT DETOXER

Spirulina is extremely high in chlorophyll, which helps remove toxins from the blood and boost the immune system. It can also bind with heavy metals in the body and help eliminate them.

HOW TO TAKE IT

  • It comes in tablet form and can easily be taken with water.
  • Whip up these Protein Stuffed Dates. They’re full of spirulina for when you need a little energy boost.
  • If you’re feeling particularly hardcore, you can stir a teaspoon into a glass of fresh juice or water and knock it back, but be warned it kinda tastes like the seaweed (well it is algae, that’s probably why!).
