Hot Choccy with a Collagen Boost

This hot choccy is so good, you can have it for breakfast! We’ve added in collagen protein and cacao to really boost the goodness. Cacao is a natural energy booster and is packed with so many vitamins and minerals that it’s actually considered sacred in many cultures. Here we’ve revved up your regular sugary hot chocolate with all of these nourishing ingredients, making it thick, creamy and rich through natural ingredients like coconut butter and cacao butter.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body! It’s used in many processes and structurally is makes up our hair, skin, nails and most importantly our gut lining. It’s a natural gut healer, has beauty boosting effects, and many find it far easier to digest than other processed protein powders out there.

According to nutritionist Liv Kaplan, starting your day with something low in sugar, and high in satiating protein and fats is a more effective way to ensure your blood sugar is stable throughout the day. This leads to increased concentration, productivity and mood!

Hot Collagen Cacao

Ingredients
  • 1 tbsn raw cacao powder
  • 1 tbsn coconut butter
  • 2 tspn cacao butter
  • 1 scoop collagen powder
  • 1/2 tspn cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in a blender with a cup of hot water. Blend, pour into a cup and dust with extra cacao.

    Hi, the hot chocolate drink recipe looks really good, especially as I’m dairy intolerant (allergy: casein protein).

    I feel worried about going to the health shop to buy collagen, because I don’t know about that. Are there different kinds? Are there ones that are produced from products that I don’t want ?, like from animals? Can you recommend brands that are good, safe brands please?
    Also, some information on the cocoa butter and coconut butter would be good too if you have it. I’ve bought coconut oil, because I read and heard that it is a super food that will help me lose weight, when in actual fact (even though I only had smallish amounts regularly), I ended up feeling like the mean girl in Mean Girls who got told that the food bars helped you lose weight, and she put on a ton !
    By the way, I’m 53 but not ”old”, active as a nurse, pretty fit and healthy but menopause is flipping my weight control efforts out and I’m struggling with that, which is also why I’m cautious about anything coconut 🙂

      The best thing to look for with collagen is grass fed and grass finished or pasture raised. Collagen can come from a variety of animal sources but most often you’ll find it from beef or marine sources with are made from fish. Unfortunately you can’t buy collagen that is not produced from animals. If you’re located in Australia, Be Gutsy is a great trust worthy brand. Otherwise online you can purchase Vital Proteins Collagen or Dr Axe Collagen, these are both good.

      While I do love coconut products, unfortunately no single food can make you lose weight. Your weight is controlled by a variety of factors, most notably hormones! A little coconut is nothing to be afraid of, and in fact having good fats is important for satiety and health overall!

      I’ve used coconut butter and cacao butter in this recipe to make it creamy, chocolatey and satisfying!

    Love the recipe. I was just wondering whether there’s any plant-based ingredient you can recommend to replace collagen. I’ve done a little search and I’ve read that agar agar (powder?) might be able to do the job. Please let me know what you think.
